In Our Own Words
We the global online citizens have never been really apart from each other, but also have never really been together partly because of language barriers. Fortunately, participants of citizen media all around the world have recognized this situation and are doing enormous efforts to bridge those divides. Projects like Yeeyan, Interlocals.net, Gyaku, Cucumis, Avaaz, Wikipedia and of course Global Voices are models of human translation with online cooperation, while there are also numerous tools offered by online services which can make the work more effortless. In the fourth session of day two, the summit will be focusing on the translation within citizen media: how to translate various languages in complex international contexts? what are the limits? and how we can go beyond those limits?
Chris Salzberg [1]
is a writer/translator and graduate student living in Tokyo, Japan. I am the Japanese language editor for Global Voices [2] (with Hanako Tokita), and also involved in various other participatory media projects. I have written about Internet censorship issues in Japan for mainstream media and blogs, and have been quoted on the topic by papers such as the Guardian and Sydney Morning Herald.
Rezwan [3]
started blogging in April 2003 at The Third World View [3], which tries to portray Bangladesh and Bangladeshis beyond the typical headlines seen in news. I have seen the Bangladeshi blogosphere grow and have been bridge blogging in Global Voices since 2005. I have been instrumental in setting up an online archive for the genocide in Bangladesh in 1971 [4] in the hands of the Paksitani Army. My passion is now enriching Global Voices in Bangla [5].

Brazilian journalist and translator living in London. I blog about translation and Brazilian literature and poetry available in English [7] [pt] and also keep a blog about our GVO coverage of the Lusosphere [8] [pt]. I am also proud to be a volunteer translator for the Global Voices Lingua project in Portuguese [9].
